Late last year I discovered something surprising on the Zara website. I was shocked, ecstatic, excited and dear I say Livid.
I hadn't really given much thought to clothes shopping when it came to Zara, as, well, they never had my size, so I never bothered. You see I've always loved Zara's style and quality of clothing, but they never give me, or any plus size women a chance to own a piece of their clothing in our wardrobe. To me it seemed like Zara was fixed on having people with a certain body type wear their clothes. You can see this from the models. They were always really slim, and had an androgynous body, and I being the exact opposite of that (at the moment) didn't stand a chance. All of this stopped last year when Zara was finally made to see the light through a petition raised by a young Anna Riera. Although Zara has released a plus size line, it's still doesn't run that high. Zara's sizes have always been small, there sizes start from a small which is a true size 6 and now runs to xxl which is a true size 14. Although I am happy and impressed at Zara's new changes, it still has a long way to go.
If you are a plus size like me, and you're have difficulties shopping at Zara, here are a few tricks that have worked for me:
1. Knit wear
Zara's Knitwear are often stretchy, so even if they are a couple sizes smaller you will still be able to fit into them. They are mostly thick, so they hold the body well.
2. Oversized clothing
This is something I'm always on the look at for. Oversized clothing are perfect when looking for a good fit, especially when there aren't any in your size.
Zara's outwear are often loose fitted on the model, which means they can be nicely fitted on you. Outwear are a great choice as in this selection there's good amount allowance left for the wearer.
4. Stretchy band
I have wide hips and smaller waist, therefore I've always had an issue with trousers. It's either they are too big at the waist but fit my hips perfectly, or the other way round. Apart from wearing a belt, a trick I've come to learn is to sew in an elastic band at the back of the waist of the trousers that fit my hips perfectly; that way I can get into them easily, and the band is cinched in at the waist, because of the elastic. The great thing is Zara sometimes do this with their trousers. For example the suit trousers I have wearing in the pictures has a an elastic at the back of the band, which gave me allowance to be able to fit into the trousers and cinch in at the waist. These trousers are meant to be looser than they look on me, I would have gone for a bigger size, however the highest size was in xl (thanks Zara) , and I don't mind the tight fit as I am still able to move very comfortably in them. Comfort is always key for me.
